Neurology: The Importance of Time After a Stroke – Essentia Health

When someone has a stroke, when there’s a blocked blood vessel, what we conventionally refer to as stroke is ischemic stroke. Meaning an artery, a blood vessel that supplies one part of the brain, is blocked. When that happens there is some immediate injury because the brain cannot sustain lack of oxygen for more than a few minutes. Time is of importance because with every minute, it has been calculated or estimated that million neurons or nerve cells are being damaged with ongoing ischemia or ongoing lack of blood flow. So if we are able to reverse the flow sooner, we are talking in the order of hundreds of millions of neurons that we can potentially save.
